And then there’s the Blu-ray player itself, hulking there under your telly as a reminder of a bygone age of ugly black boxes. But there’s a simple, streamlined solution. Why not rip these movies to a hard drive, where you can access them any time via an Apple TV or similar device? Here the way to get a digital copy of your Blu-rays for Apple TV 4/3/2/1 even the coming fifth-gen Apple TV.

Blu-ray to Apple TV 5/4/3/2/1

Preparation

To make copies of your Blu-rays for ATV 4/3/2 and the fifth-gen Apple TV, we need a few things to rip a Blu-ray movie onto your PC’s hard drive/SSD.

1. Blu-ray Drive (Internal or External)

2. Free up a fair bit of space on your computer’s hard or flash drive: there’s vast amounts of data stored on a Blu-ray, and during the ripping process all of it is going to be dumped (if only temporarily) on your PC. The amount of space required will vary with each disc, but for a standard (i.e. non-4K) disc, 60GB of room should suffice.

3. Blu-ray Decrypter: Rip the movie off the Blu-ray disc and convert Blu-ray M2TS video to Apple TV 5/4/3/2/1 supported format video.

Recommendation

Pavtube ByteCopy for Mac is made for ripping and converting Blu-ray to Apple TV 4/3/2 or the coming fifth-gen Apple TV playable MPEG-4, H.264 video. But this process may let you lose surround sound on original DVDs for some unknown reason, like your DVD Ripper can’t give you 5.1 sound keeping or other reasons. To play DVD on Apple TV 4 with surround sound, you have to make sure that your DVD disc has an AC3 5.1-channel track. Some discs, especially those containing only audio, have PCM tracks. And you also need to make sure your DVD ripping tool can keep 5.1 surround sound. For example, old version Handbrake will only rip files into 2 channel AAC audio – obviously not surround sound.

When you make sure your DVDs have surround sound, we recommend you to use Pavtube ByteCopy Mac to help you convert DVD to ATV with AC3 surround sound. It not only can rip DVD but Blu-ray to Apple TV 4/3/2/1. When your origianl discs have 5.1/7.1 sound, this software can keep it. As a versatile DVD Ripper, the program can stream not only DVD to Apple TV, but also rip DVD to iPad (iPad Air 3, ipad mini 4), iPhone (iPhone 6S,iPhone SE, etc.), and many other popular video/audio format like WMV, AVI, FLV, 3GP, MKV, AIFF, AAC, and more. Play DVD on Android mobile phones is also a simple case with this DVD converting tool.

How to Rip DVD to Apple TV 4 with AC3 Surround Sound?

Step 1: Run Pavtube DVD to ATV covnerter, and import DVD movies files to the program. You can directly load DVD source from your DVD disc by inserting it to your DVD Rom, or you can import source movies from ISO/IFO file or a DVD folder stored on your HDD.

DVD to ATV with AC3 surround sound

Pavtube DVD to ATV 4 Converter checks the main title of the DVD automatically once you loaded the source movie. If you don’t want to rip the main title, you can uncheck it, and tick off whatever title you want to convert for Apple TV 4. Plus, you can select your wanted subtitles track to be embedded into the resulted files before conversion.

Step 2: Choose “Apple TV 3 Dolby Digital Pass-through (*.m4v)” as output format

Pavtube Blu-ray to Apple TV Converter offers numerous presets optimized for Apple TV, ranging from the first Apple TV, Apple TV 2 to the new Apple TV 3rd Generation. No matter which ATV format you choose as output, an AC-3 encoded audio track will be included in the converted files for Apple TV to pass-through Dolby Digital 5.1 sound. In that case, it will work in surround sound when Apple TV is connected to audio receiver and in stereo when Apple TV is connected with TV only. For example, here we choose “Apple TV 3 Dolby Digital Pass-through (*.m4v)” as output format and convert DVD to 1080p M4V for ATV 4.

By choosing this format, you will get two sound tracks in the resulted 1080p m4v video, one is stereo, and the other is AC3 encoded Dolby Digital 5.1 pass-through. When your Apple TV 4 is connected to audio receiver, the 5.1 surround sound will work. When ATV 4 is connected to your HDTV only, the stereo track will work.

Step 3: Rip DVD for Apple TV 4

Click on “Convert”button to start Blu-ray to Apple TV conversion on Mac. The Mac Blu-ray Ripper for Apple TV will bypass copy-protections and convert Blu-ray to Apple TV video with AC3 6 channels track. After conversion you can click “Open” button to get the final ripped Blu-ray files with AC3 5.1 audio pass-through.

Connect Apple TV with your Mac. Open iTunes, find the Movies library of Apple TV in DEVICES, and drag the converted DVD movies to the Movie library of Apple TV. Or you may copy the movies to iTunes Library and sync them to Apple TV in batches. When playing ripped DVD movie with Apple TV, make sure an optical cable is used to pass through AC3 5.1 track to your AV receiver. Some folks find audio is missing while video plays fine. This is because they are using Analog audio ports to output audio instead of Optical digital audio port, or the connected AV receiver/amplifier does not support AC-3 decoding.(Read iPad and Apple TV AirPlay)

Output File

When we are finished, the output file that goes into iTunes will have the following characteristics:

  • Nicely tagged with meta data and cover art to look the part in iTunes.
  • Audio will be kept in AC3, 5.1 sound for ATV 4.
  • Only the foreign audio subtitle track will be included and will be burned into the movie.  This will mean that any subtitles you would normally see if the language used in the film is foreign (for example think when people are talking Elvish in Lord of the Rings) will be included automatically.
  • No other subtitle tracks will be included.  Lets face it, if you’re using this for your own purposes – why would you need a German subtitle track?

Tools Needed

To follow this guide, you will need the following tools:

There are a slew of under-the-radar features that let you customize your TV to your heart’s content and make it much easier to use. Apple just released tvOS 9.2, which baked a ton of functionality into the device (including some features from older TV models).

Here are 15 top tips and tricks to make the most out of your fourth-generation Apple TV. Have any of your own to add?

Siri searches across apps

Searching for stuff to watch on your Apple TV just got a whole lot easier with the help of Siri. If you search for a movie or TV show from the home screen, Siri will search across several apps, including iTunes, Netflix, Hulu, Showtime, and HBO. If you open one of those apps and use voice search, Siri will show results just in that app. There are tons of tips and tricks to using the new Siri remote alone, so check out our list of Siri commands here and more touchpad remote shortcuts here.

If you need an assist or don’t know what to ask, just press the microphone button on the remote and Siri will offer a few prompts.

Audio options

When you’re playing a video, a quick swipe down on the trackpad reveals some audio options. “Reduce Loud Sounds” will attempt to smooth out jarring changes in volume (handy for loud commercials in some TV streams), but Full Dynamic Range is the default. If the app you’re using supports closed captioning or foreign language subtitles, you can control that here. You can also select different speakers, which is great if you have a receiver or soundbar that supports AirPlay, or even paired Bluetooth headphones if you don’t want to wake the baby.

When “swipe down” won’t disappear

When you’re watching a show or movie in an app like Hulu or YouTube, you can swipe down for more options as it plays. But if the “Swipe down for info” alert doesn’t disappear after a few seconds, which happened to Macworld’s Susie Ochs frequently in Hulu, either pause and restart the video to make it disappear, or press Menu to go back one level and then restart the video.

New Aerial screensavers

If you love the Aerial screensaver, head to Settings > General > Screensaver, and with Aerial selected in the Type field, you can change the Download New Videos field from Monthly to Weekly or even Daily. Just be aware new videos are downloaded in batches of about 600MB. You can’t customize which views you’re shown in Aerial, though—no restricting it to just your favorite city, for example.

Choose your own screensaver

You can use your own photos as screensavers instead of the stunning aerial options Apple preloaded on the TV. Open the Photos app on your TV and then select an album you want to use as the screensaver carousel. Tap the screensaver option to set that album as your screensaver. You can change up your screensaver at any time by going to Settings > General > Screensaver > Screensaver Type.

Create Apple Music playlists

Apple Music subscribers can add to existing playlists or create new ones straight from the Apple TV. Pick a song to play, then use the touchpad to tap the More option (denoted with the ellipses) at the top of the Now Playing screen. Tap Add to Playlist and pick one to add to, or select “new” and give your playlist a name. If all goes well, iCloud Music Library will sync the playlist across all your devices.

Just like the iPhone

Apple TV has an app switcher of its own—just double-tap the TV button on your Siri remote. You can close apps by swiping up on the touchpad remote.

Get rid of unwanted apps

How to delete apps after installing them: Navigate over to the unwanted app and highlight it, then press down on the touch surface of your Siri remote until the app jiggles, just like it would on an iOS device. Press the play/pause button on the remote, then tap “Delete.” As on iOS devices, you can’t remove native tvOS apps that shipped with the device.

Free up storage space

The new Apple TV comes with 32GB or 64GB of space, depending on how much you spend. If you’re an app-hoarder with a 32GB version, you’ll need to keep a close eye on how much room you have left by tapping through Settings > General > Manage storage. You’ll see a full list of apps stored on the TV and how much space they take up. You can delete the most egregious space-hogs by highlighting and tapping the trash can icon next to each app, or you can delete apps directly from the home screen.

Move apps around the home screen

If you just want to move an app without deleting it, follow the same steps as you would to delete it: Highlight it and press down on the touch surface to make the app jiggle. Instead of hitting the play/pause button, just use the touchpad to swipe side to side or up/down and move the app around.

Put the TV to bed

You can’t power down the new Apple TV, but you can put it to sleep. Just hold the home button, which will prompt the TV to ask if you also want to turn off devices connected to the TV—this means your television set. Press the home button once to turn it back on again. You can also put the TV in sleep mode by going to Settings > Sleep Now.

Two tips to restart

So you can’t turn off your Apple TV, but you can reboot it if you need to by tapping through Settings > System > Restart. If that doesn’t work for some reason, hold down the menu and home buttons on the Siri remote at the same time, then let them go when your display starts flashing.

Add multiple Apple IDs to your TV

Multiple people can use the Apple TV in your house, and they don’t have to load up your account with their purchases if you don’t want them to. Associate multiple Apple IDs with your TV by adding a new Apple ID under Settings > Accounts > iTunes and App Store. After the new ID is added, your family members can switch to their accounts under Settings > Accounts > iTunes and App Store. If they install apps on the TV under their account, those apps will remain on your home screen.

Skip forward, jump back

Siri can handle many of the little tasks you want to perform on your Apple TV, like fast-forwarding or rewinding content you’re watching. But you can also skip back and forth through a movie or show using the Siri remote: Press the right side of the touchpad to skip 10 seconds forward, and press the left side to skip back 10 seconds.

Additional Tips: Stream videos (DVD, Blu-ray also included) to Apple TV 4

Most people’s first thought upon playing DVD/Blu-ray on Apple TV/4 is to stream/AirPlay/mirror DVD/Blu-ray to Apple TV 4 from Mac or PC, which however has some limits and will be explained later. Some say use VLC media player, which should works but I have never tried it myself. Are there any other ways? Ripping DVD/Blu-ray to Apple TV 4 seems to be the ultimate solution, to some extent. Tips: 20 Best Romantic Movies to Watch on Valentine’s Day

With so many sappy romantic movies out there, it’s hard to decide what to watch. Here are the best romantic movies ever made to watch on Valentine’s Day.

20 – Love and Basketball (2000)

Nobody watches the WNBA because they look like men, but play like women…

While many romance movies are difficult for men to watch, Love & Basketball goes a long way into drawing men into this “chick flick” genre by incorporating an underlying sports theme. Quincy (Omar Epps) and Monica (Sanaa Lathan) meet on the basketball court as kids, and their love/hate relationship keeps their lives intersecting as they live their individual dreams of playing pro ball. If you’re young, enjoy sports, or crave passion, this movie’s for you.

Best Quote: Monica “It’s a trip, you know? When you’re a kid, you see the life you want, and it never crosses your mind that it’s not gonna turn out that way.”

19 – Cactus Flower (1969)

Goldie Hawn is now an old woman, yet those lights are still up at Applebees…life’s a bitch…

Kate Hudson’s mom, Goldie Hawn, won an Oscar for her portrayal of Toni Simmons, a confused 21-year old woman in a relationship with an older man (Walter Matthau). Although it looks like an Austin Powers film, Hawn’s wit and charm allows you to still get into it. The intertwining love story about the various lies a dentist tells to keep a relationship was remade in 2011 by Adam Sandler in Just Go With It. So if you hate old movies, read about Cactus Flower and compare it to that one throughout so you look smart about pop culture.

Best Quote: Igor Sullivan (Rick Lenz) “You were going about it all wrong. I believe you’re supposed to put your head in the stove.”

Toni ” It’s a second hand stove. There were no directions.”

18 – Lost in Translation (2003)

You have a receding hairline, but you’re rich and famous, so I’ll let it slide…

Although it’s one of those bleak comedies, Lost in Translation has a great romance at its heart. Bob Harris (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) really capture what it feels like to be travelling somewhere foreign and wanting a connection. The brief moments of Anna Farris spoofing Cameron Diaz add just the right amount of laughs to tide you over until the moment when Bob whispers something in Charlotte’s ear, and they say goodbye. If V-Day makes you blah, you’ll most def wanna check this one out.

Best Quote: Bob “Can you keep a secret? I’m trying to organize a prison break. I’m looking for, like, an accomplice. We have to first get out of this bar, then the hotel, then the city, and then the country. Are you in or you out?”

17 – When in Rome (2010)

I have a feeling this broad is high maintenance…

Although Forgetting Sarah Marshall is Kristen Bell’s most popular role, 2010’s When in Rome is an underrated film. She plays Beth, an ambitious New Yorker who steals some coins from a famous love fountain in Italy during her sister’s wedding. Because of her theft, she’s chased down by Danny DeVito, Will Arnett, Jon Heder, and Dax Shepard, who are under a love spell. The movie is lighthearted, funny, and a great way to create and celebrate a happy Valentine’s Day.

Best Quote: Beth “It’s like, I meet a guy, and I think it’s great, and anyone else would just be thinking about how much greater it’s going to get. And I’m constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop.”

16 – 50 First Dates (2004)

I don’t remember telling you I’d give you head daily, but what do I know?

You’d be hard pressed to come up with a more likeable couple of people than Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore. In 50 First Dates, they’re in Hawaii, and after they meet, Henry Roth (Sandler) turns from a playboy to a devoted boyfriend—the only problem is the girl of his dreams has no short-term memory, so she relives the same day over and over. This movie brings laughs, but it’s also a sappy romance movie as only Sandler can do. It’s a chick flick anyone can enjoy.

Best Quote: Dr. Keats (Dan Akroyd) “Sometimes I wish my wife had Goldfield Syndrome. That way she wouldn’t remember last night when I called her mother a loud, obnoxious drunk with a face like J. Edgar Hoover’s ass.”

15 – Slumdog Millionaire (2008)

I’m no longer a slumdog…I’m a lowly intern at a NY news station…

A testament to just how far guys are forced to go to win over a woman, Slumdog Millionaire portrays a poor man being tortured by the police for being too good at Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? This is one of those intelligent and witty movies that won a lot of critical acclaim. It’s great to watch with someone when you want to share an intelligent conversation. Dev Patel plays one of the most lovable characters on film at his later age, and the mixture of love, violence, and socioeconomic messages makes for a great date night screening

Best Quote: Jamal Malik (Patel) “When somebody asks me a question, I tell them the answer.

14 – The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

Why do you always make me put on this mask when we make love?

Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) always has problems—the media hates him, the police hate him, other superheroes hate him, and he’s constantly struggling with his love life because of it. Regardless of how you feel about the new Spider-Man series, they made the right move dropping Mary Jane for Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). Their romance is one of the most memorable in comic book history (spoiler alert: she dies).

Best Quote: Peter Parker “We all have secrets: the ones we keep… and the ones that are kept from us.”

13 – The Tourist (2010) (Runner Up: Original Sin)

My Brad Pitt sprung a leak again…he looks like a pirate…

It’s not just that Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie are beautiful people; the location shots in Paris and Venice are simply stunning. This cat-and-mouse tale has enough thrills going for it to satisfy your intellectual needs, and some action to boot. You’re never quite sure who to believe, but you can’t deny there’s chemistry between the two—if there’s anyone who could steal Jolie from Pitt, Depp seems like the type. If you want even more beauty, Jolie has great sex scenes in Original Sin.

Best Quote: Hotel Waiter Guido “Bongiorno!”

Frank Taylor (Depp) “Bon Jovi!”

12 – This Means War (2012)

I wasn’t accusing you of overcompensating; I just said it’s a really big pig…

Reese Witherspoon is a Valentine’s Day treat you won’t soon forget. All of her romantic comedies are great, but This Means War wins for mixing spy-vs-spy action into the mix. Chris Pine and Tom Hardy do a great job of keeping men distracted from Reese’s message that it’s OK to date multiple people. Adventurous couples will love this action-packed romp.

Best Quote: Trish (Chelsea Handler) “Don’t go with the better guy, go with the guy who makes you better.”

11 – (500) Days of Summer (2009)

Haha, no seriously, keep calling me quirky, and I’ll throw you off this roof…

Zooey Deschanel is that quirky girl everyone wants to be or be with. Basically the boy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) meets a girl (Deschanel), and falls in love, but she’s not into it. The movie highlights their relationship in a non-linear fashion, and is a great portrayal of modern love and relationships. If you’re the romantic type, (500) Days of Summer will make you believe true love exists.

Best Quote: Narrator “If Tom had learned anything… it was that you can’t ascribe great cosmic significance to a simple earthly event. Coincidence, that’s all anything ever is, nothing more than coincidence… Tom had finally learned—there are no miracles. There’s no such thing as fate, nothing is meant to be. He knew, he was sure of it now”

10 – Walk the Line (2005)

I’m a little bit country…she’s a little bit rock and roll…

This portrayal of Johnny and June Cash is an epic biopic. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon beautifully capture the essence of the romance. Johnny loved June Carter so much, he knew he had to marry her. Seeing their love blossom over the course of their lives is a great way to celebrate life and a relationship with someone you truly love beyond anything. These two real life people even died around the same time. It’s said Johnny died of a broken heart after June passed.

Best Quote: June Carter “Well, then start loving yourself, so we can go back to work.”

9 – Ghost Town (2008)

All I’m saying is if you liked it then you shoulda put a ring on it…

The cynical among us love Ricky Gervais, and his role as a man who can see dead people and is now doomed to help them with their love problems is a great Valentine’s Day romance story. Everyone’s tired of people bragging about their relationships on Facebook, and Gervais portrays this feeling perfectly. Love isn’t always as much fun as it sounds; sometimes you just end up involved in other people’s drama.

Best Quote: Bertram Pincus “All work and no play makes Jack- a vital member of society.”

8 – Shrek (2001)

This is awkward, but umm…I kinda preferred the you that didn’t look like Oprah…

It’s hard to believe it’s been over a decade since Shrek came out. This backwards fairy tale where the ogre gets the girl proves what it is women really want—anything but the rich kid with the little man complex. Featuring the voice talents of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow, Shrek is a feel-good movie that’s perfect for the young at heart.

Best Quote: Shrek “Oh, no no no no! Dead broad OFF the table!”

7 – Seems Like Old Times (1980)

How the hell did you make such a mess making cereal?!?!

Ahh the classics. One of the best movies from the 80s, Seems Like Old Times is a Neil Simon film that still maintains its charm. Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn are a divorced couple, and, after being forced to take part in a bank robbery, Chase hides out at Hawn’s house. The only problem is Hawn’s husband (Charles Groden) is the district attorney, so a lot of hijinx ensue. If you pine for an old flame, Seems Like Old Times is the Valentine’s Day romantic comedy for you.

Best Quote: Glenda (Hawn) “Chester. You just went through a stop sign.”

Chester (Chase) “I can’t help it. I don’t like to read when I drive.”

6 – About a Boy (2002)

Why am I the only grown man with a young boy on a list of romantic films…

You wouldn’t think watching a man hang out with an unrelated boy would be weird. Knowing that man is Hugh Grant, who chose a ragged hooker over his knockout wife Elizabeth Hurley makes it a little more awkward on paper, but on film, it plays beautifully. This is a buddy flick and a romance rolled into one, and it teaches men that parenting isn’t scary. If you’re a slacker who still hasn’t grown up, About a Boy is for you.

Best Quote: Will “The thing is, a person’s life is like a TV show. I was the star of The Will Show. And The Will Show wasn’t an ensemble drama. Guests came and went, but I was the regular. It came down to me and me alone. If Marcus’ mum couldn’t manage her own show, if her ratings were falling, it was sad, but that was her problem. Ultimately, the whole single mum plotline was a bit complicated for me.”

5 – True Romance (1993) (Runner Up: Natural Born Killers)

We can’t go out like this, babe…I don’t want to end up on the People of Walmart website…

Quentin Tarantino isn’t known for the romance in his films, but True Romance, which he wrote, is an epic romantic crime drama. There are drugs, hookers, and all sorts of guns. The love between Clarence (Christian Slater) and Alabama (Patricia Arquette) is something we all wish we had. By the time this movie reaches its bloody climax, not only will you be in love with Elvis, but you’ll know the origin of Sicilians.

Best Quote: Clarence Worley “You just said you love me, now if I say I love you and just throw caution to the wind and let the chips fall where they may and you’re lying to me I’m gonna fuckin’ die.”

4 – Titanic (1997)

Exclusive shot from the set of Scorsese’s Smurfs Origins: The Rise of Azriel…

Spoiler Alert: The ship sinks, and it takes like half the movie. Before it happens though, Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) steals Rose (Kate Winslett) from her rich husband-to-be. If you watch the film closely, you’ll notice Rose withholds the blue gem from the man looking for it (holding up an expensive expedition) so she can tell him the story of the man she left for a man she promised she’d never let go of (before disposing of his body in the waters, never to be found or identified), before throwing the damn gem into the ocean. What a bitch.

Best Quote: Jack “I’m the king of the world!!”

3 – Bride and Prejudice (2004)

I would do anything for this woman…anything…literally anything…

This Bollywood take on the classic “Pride and Prejudice” is a musical delight. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is one of the most beautiful women to ever exist, and her acting, singing, and dancing expertise is on full display. This movie is beautiful, tells a renowned story, and you’ll look worldly for suggesting it. The colorful costumes and set designs are like taking an exotic vacation from your couch.

Best Quote: Lalita Bakshi (Rai) “You should be stirring your husband’s dinner not trouble.”

2 – Love, Actually (2003)

What time is it? I need to get back to my husband soon…

Love Actually follows the intertwining stories of eight British couples dealing with love in very different ways. It’s a romantic comedy and a Christmas film, but it is in no way sappy. It’s a touching comedy filled with amazing moments. It’s impossible to watch this movie without laughing, crying, and falling in love with at least one character. Love Actually is the best romantic comedy ever written.

Best Quote: Billy Mack (Bill Nighy) “Hiya kids. Here is an important message from your Uncle Bill. Don’t buy drugs. Become a pop star, and they give you them for free!”

1 – The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

Cheers to debauchery!

Good idea: telling your wife and/or girlfriend you want to watch this Oscar-nominated Leonardo DiCaprio flick. It’ll make you sound like you’re genuinely interested in the financial crisis and things we can do to save the economy. You can even tell them you got the idea from this Lifehack from bona fide Bank whistleblower Brian Penny.

Bad idea: telling your wife and/or girlfriend you downloaded the DVD screener from The Pirate Bay before the release date, and it’s filled with naked women. When Leo snorts coke off a hooker’s bum in the first five minutes, act like you had no idea it would be like this—then sit back, relax, and watch your dream life acted out before your very eyes. This is the best shot you have at opening the conversation about watching porn with your girlfriend (here’s the facts before you even open your mouth to say you don’t: Porn Statistics).

Best Quote: Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio) “I am not gonna die sober!”

You can do things like mirror your Mac’s screen or your iPad’s screen to your television, customize the Apple TV home screen to your liking, play games through the Apple TV, and even use your iPhone or iPad as an Apple TV remote.

Without further ado, here are 34 Apple TV tips and tricks that you can use to make your living room entertainment experience way better.

Use Your iPhone or iPad to Set Up Your Apple TV

Just like the third-generation Apple TV, you can set up your new Apple TV the easy way without having to navigate through on-screen menus manually by using your iPhone to set it all up.

All you need to do is make sure that your iPhone or iPad is running at least iOS 9.1 and connected to your preferred WiFi network and that Bluetooth is on. Then, simply just set your iPhone or iPad on top of the Apple TV and it will detect the automatic setup. We have a more thorough guide that you can go over.

Rearrange Home Screen Apps

If you’re not quite happy with how your home screen apps are laid out, you can actually rearrange them to better suit your needs.

Simply just highlight the app that you want to move and then press and hold down on the trackpad on the Apple TV remote. The app icons will begin to jiggle, and from there all you need to do is use is swipe across the trackpad to move the app to the desired location on the home screen.

Mirror Your Mac’s Display to Your TV

Apple has a feature called AirPlay that allows you to stream content from a Mac or iOS device to your Apple TV to play on your television. You can also use it to mirror your Mac’s display to your television.

Simply click on the AirPlay icon in your Mac’s menu bar and then select your Apple TV from the list. From there, your Mac’s display will show up on your television and you can use that to show off photos to friends and family and what not.

Mirror Your iPhone or iPad’s Screen to Your TV

Similar to how you can mirror your Mac’s display to your television, you can do the same thing with your iPhone or iPad.

Simply bring up Control Center on your iPhone or iPad and tap on AirPlay. From the list that pops up, click on your Apple TV and then enable Mirroring. Your iPhone or iPad’s screen will now appear on your television.

Play Games on Your Apple TV

One big feature of the new Apple TV is the ability to play games right on the set-top box, and many of the popular games that you’ve played on your iPhone in the past can now be played on your television.

The best part is that you don’t need to AirPlay the games to your TV. The games are stored locally on the Apple TV and you simply use the remote as a controller, or you can buy a third-party gamepad.

Download Third-Party Apps

On previous Apple TV models, you only had the apps that were available, and many of them you probably didn’t use. However, the new Apple TV allows you to download third-party apps, providing much more content to watch on the device.

There are a ton of Apple TV apps available, and we made a huge list of some that you should check out.

Use Your iPhone or iPad as a Remote

The remote that comes with your Apple TV is pretty cool, especially with it having a trackpad and a Siri button, but it can easily become lost. If you can’t find your Apple TV remote, you can actually use your iPhone or iPad as a remote.

By downloading and installing the Remote app, you can turn your iOS device into an Apple TV remote and control the streaming box using your iPhone or iPad.

Use a Universal Remote with Your Apple TV

If you’re not a big fan of the Apple TV remote or would just rather use the universal remote that you already have, you can program it to work with your Apple TV.

Using the Apple remote, navigate to Settings > Remotes and Devices and choose Learn Remote. Select a setting on your universal remote that doesn’t control any of your current devices and then hit Start.

Rename Your Apple TV

If you have more than one Apple TV in your house, it may be a good idea to rename them so that you know which one is which.

To do this, navigate to Settings > AirPlay > Apple TV Name and choose from the list depending on where that particular Apple TV box is located, such as Living Room, Bedroom, etc.

Put Your Apple TV to Sleep Immediately

There’s a way that you can shut off your Apple TV, or rather, put it to sleep. However, it involves a few steps and navigation menus to go through before you can actually turn it off.

However, there’s a quick way you can immediately put your Apple TV to sleep, and all you have to do is press and hold down on the Home button on your Apple TV remote and then select Sleep.

Get Back to the Home Screen Quicker

If you’re sick of pressing the Menu button down five times to finally get back to the home screen, there’s a quicker way of doing so.

On the older Apple TV, you would hold down the Menu button to get back to the home screen, but on the new remote you can simply click the Home button to get back to the main screen.

Set Up Parental Controls

If you have kids and don’t want them to watch just anything on the Apple TV in your living room, you can set up restrictions so that they can only watch content that you approve.

Navigate to Settings > General > Restrictions. This is where you can set up all sorts of restrictions for movies and TV shows, like restricting content based on rating, and preventing your kids from purchasing or renting any movies or TV shows without your permission.

Access Your Photos on Your Apple TV

Any photos that you’ve taken on your iPhone or iPad can be immediately available to view on your Apple TV by enabling My Photo Stream on both your iOS device and your Apple TV.

First, to enable it on your Apple TV, simply open the Photos app and click on Turn on iCloud Photos.

Next, to turn on My Photo Stream on your iOS device, navigate to Settings > iCloud > Photos and turn on My Photo Stream. Now whenever you take a photo, it will show up on your Apple TV in the Photos app.

Use Your Photos as a Screensaver Slideshow

Your Apple TV can use Apple’s own Aerial wallpapers, which are really cool and fun to watch. However, if you want to use your own photos, you can make that happen as well.

Since you already enabled iCloud Photos in the previous tip, all you need to do is navigate to Settings > Screensaver > Type and select My Photos. From there, you can select to use your own photos as your Apple TV’s screen saver.

Watch Trailers to All the Latest Movies

You could technically go to YouTube and search for a movie trailer you want to watch, but it’s not the best option when it comes to watching from a collection of trailers.

If you’re simply just interested in watching some random movie trailers of the latest movies, the Trailers app is a good app to use if you’re wanting to find a movie that you might want to go see in theaters. While it used to be a default app on older Apple TV models, you’ll have to download it from the App Store on the new Apple TV.

Purchase and Rent Movies & TV Shows

While this technically isn’t a hidden tip or trick of any kind, many new Apple TV users might not be aware that you can purchase or rent movies and TV shows right on the Apple TV and begin watching it immediately.

The Movies and TV Shows app toward the top of the home screen allow you to browse the iTunes catalog of video content that you can either buy or rent. After you make a purchase, you can start watching it right away on your Apple TV. It’s perhaps the easiest way to buy or rent movies and TV shows.

Quickly Pair a Remote with Your Apple TV

Do you have more than one Apple TV in your house, but can only seem to find one Apple TV remote? You can use it to control any Apple TV box.

Since the new Apple TV remote uses Bluetooth, you’ll need to pair a new remote to the box, which can be done by simply holding the Menu button and the Volume Up button at the same time.

Bring Up the App Switcher

Just like on the iPhone and iPad, the new Apple TV now has an app switcher.

To activate it, simply double-click the Home button. From there, you can swipe through all the apps that are open. If a particular app is frozen or acting up, you can highlight it and then swipe up to force-close it.

Manually Start the Screensaver

In the settings you can set how long it takes for the screensaver to activate, but if you want to manually start it at any time, there’s a quick shortcut to make that happen.

Double-clicking the Menu button while you’re at the home screen will force the screensaver to start if you don’t want to wait for it to automatically appear.

Quickly Restart Your Apple TV

If your Apple TV is acting up in general, it might be a good idea to restart it and give it a fresh start.

You can restart your Apple TV from the settings, but the easiest way is to press and hold the Menu and Home buttons at the same time.

Quickly Change to Uppercase/Lowercase

The on-screen keyboard on the Apple TV is rather lacking — it’s just not that great, but here’s a neat trick that can make it easier to use.

Simply clicking the Play/Pause button will change the keyboard from lowercase to uppercase, and vice versa. You can also hover over any letter and hold down the trackpad to bring up a menu, which includes the uppercase or lowercase version of that letter.

Delete an App from the Home Screen

Did you download an app or game, but no longer use it? There’s a way to quickly delete them from your Apple TV right from the home screen.

Simply hover over the app you want to delete and then hold down the trackpad until all of the apps start to jiggle. From there, click the Play/Pause button to delete the highlighted app or game.

Skip Ahead 10 Seconds in Any Video

On the Apple TV remote, you can swipe to scrub through a video, but if you only want to fast forward a few seconds, you can click on the right side of the trackpad to skip ahead 10 seconds. The same can be done on the left side of the trackpad to rewind 10 seconds.

Make the Trackpad More Touch Sensitive

If you feel like the trackpad isn’t as sensitive as you’d like, you can raiser or lower the sensitivity in the settings.

Go into Settings > Remotes and Devices and select Touch Surface Tracking to change the sensitivity of the remote’s trackpad.

Quickly Jump Back to the Music App

The Music app on the Apple TV is the only app that can play content while on currently being open, so when you play a song and exit out of the app, that song will continue to play.

However, there’s a quick trick to use that can get you back to the Music app instantly. Simply hold down the Play/Pause button for a few seconds until it takes you directly to the Music app.

Check the Remote’s Battery Level

Your Apple TV remote uses an internal battery and it can last for months on one charge, but you can view how much battery life it has left.

To check the battery level, navigate to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth.

Allow the Remote to Adjust Your TV’s Volume

A really cool feature of the Apple TV remote is that it can control the volume of your TV or audio receiver.

Go into Settings > Remotes and Devices and select Volume Control. From here, the Apple TV can learn the volume buttons on your regular remote and replicate it with the volume buttons on the Apple TV remote.

Connect Bluetooth Headphones

If you want to watch a movie on your Apple TV but don’t want to bug anyone else in the house, you can connect a Bluetooth pair of headphones to your Apple TV for quiet listening.

Go to Settings > Remotes and Devices > Bluetooth and your Apple TV will begin to look for devices in range. Make sure your headphones are in pairing mode and you can then connect them to your Apple TV.

Add Another Apple ID

You may have not known this, but you can add another Apple ID to your Apple TV and have multiple Apple IDs associated with your Apple TV box.

Go to Settings > Accounts > iTunes and App Store > Add New Apple ID. After you add a second account, you can switch between them by going into Settings > Accounts > iTunes and App Store and then selecting the account you want to use at that time.

Equalize Movie Volume

If you’re watching a movie that includes both loud explosions and quiet dialogue, you might benefit from a unique Apple TV feature.

Go to Settings > Audio and Video and select Reduce Loud Sounds. You can also tell Siri to “reduce loud sounds” during a movie without going into settings.

View a Complete List of Siri Commands

Siri can do all sorts of things on the Apple TV, but if you’re not sure where to start, you can simply click the Siri button once and a list of commands will pop up that you can use with Siri.

From there, holding down on the Siri button will activate Siri and you can then say a command.

Check the Strength of Your Apple TV’s Internet Connection

If your content is stuttering and you might think it’s your WiFi signal to the Apple TV that’s the culprit, you can go into Settings > General > About and see your WiFi signal strength at the bottom. It will display in five circles just like on the iPhone.

Watch Live TV

If you don’t want to switch back and forth between your Apple TV and watching live TV, you can get your Apple to play live television using an app called Channels and plugging in an ethernet HD tuner.

Something like the HD Homerun TV tuner can work great, and the Channels app brings the live TV capabilities to life.
