The latest Amazon Fire TV update has added official support for external USB storage, which is used for storing apps and games. As for other uses of USB storage, Amazon explicitly states that you cannot access any media that you side-loaded onto the USB device. But fortunately, Amazon is not going out of their way to block apps from accessing USB external storage. Apps like VLC and Kodi can play media stored on an attached external drive without any issues. So you can put your converted DVD MP4 files to External USB storage then stream them with VLC and Kodi. Another way is to put DVD rips to NAS to stream on ATV.

Play Blu-ray on Amazon Fire TV 2 with Kodi http://smarttv-tips.com/play-blu-ray-on-amazon-fire-tv-with-kodi/ http://smarttv-tips.com/play-blu-ray-on-amazon-fire-tv-with-kodi/#respond Thu, 24 Sep 2015 07:01:49 +0000 http://smarttv-tips.com/?p=45 Read More ...]]> Recently, I saw a question in Reddit about playing Blu-ray on Amazon Fire TV 2 with Kodi and I think I can give help to those who have the same problem:

“I sideloaded Kodi 14.2 on the Amazon Fire TV 2 box. I have an external hard drive connected to my router that has all of my media. I have some SD files and a bunch of blu-ray rips, some compressed but most uncompressed. All of the SD content I played works fine and most of the blu-ray content works fine as well. However, there are some blu-ray files (some are .mkv, some are .m2ts, and some are .iso) that play choppy no matter what I try to do. I have tried re-ripping them with other programs and nothing works. It’s not a network issue as it never shows that it’s buffering…I tried all of their fixes and nothing has worked yet. I even tried older versions of Kodi with no luck. So, any ideas?”

According to what the questioner mentioned, I guess that there are two things that could be the issue:

First, it should be hardware acceleration. Under Settings – Videos – Playback, turn off “Allow hardware acceleration (MediaCodec)”. It has problems on the Fire TV (and Android in general). You may need to set the settings level to Expert for this. The negative to disabling this is that it will affect interlaced video. Deinterlacing won’t look as good.

If that doesn’t fix the problem, it is possible that the particular Blu-ray files are encoded in VC-1 as opposed to H.264. Many Blu-rays are, and if you are using unaltered .m2ts or .iso files its possible they are still VC-1. Unfortunately the Fire TV 2 cannot decode VC-1 in hardware, and its little CPU can’t keep up. Your only solution is to transcode them into H.264 or another format on your PC (assuming you are set on using Kodi on a Fire TV2 ).

If you are will to transcode Blu-ray to Kodi supported H.264 MP4, I can recommend you Pavtube Video Converter Ultimate, with which you can easily rip Blu-ray disc movies to Kodi supported format for watching. Besides, with it you can rip Blu-ray to any unprotected common videos, such as MP4, MKV, MOV, AVI, WMV, MPG, M4V or other formats you need.
